SRU is home to a large variety of musical ensembles, offering numerous opportunities for non-music majors to pursue their interests in performing. One of the newest additions to this vibrant community is the Rock-appellas, a performance group formed in the fall semester of 2024.
The Rock-appellas specialize in a cappella, a style of music performed entirely without instruments, where all musical elements are created vocally. This unique group aims to gain more traction and attention on campus as they grow.
Ryan Eggert, a junior with a dual concentration in BA acting and theatre arts management, is the founder and president of the Rock-appellas. He shared the inspiration behind starting the group:
“I actually am the main person to have pushed for this group’s creation, and what inspired me to do so was the experience I had at my first college as a freshman at Duquesne. There, I was part of an a cappella group called Mic Drop. I had so much fun that I was hoping to join an a cappella group when I arrived on campus here. Since there wasn’t one, I was inspired to try and start SRU’s first-ever official a cappella group.”
Although the group is small, it is composed of students who are passionate about making a cappella music. Eggert expressed what he loves most about this organization:
“I have met a lot of incredibly talented and amazing people through this journey, and I think that has been the most rewarding part for sure. I also love the opportunity I get to, not only sing and do something I am passionate about, but to teach and lead others through it as well!”
Their final performance of the year is scheduled for December 6. Eggert explained, “We will be going to houses and caroling with pieces and carols we have learned this semester.” Looking ahead, the group hopes to perform both on and off campus, with the goal of sharing their music as much as possible.
Eggert also discussed how joining the Rock-appellas benefits students on campus:
“Students have the opportunity to either join this fun singing ensemble and make great friends and music, or students can book the Rock-appellas for a potential performance at an event.”
With their enthusiastic spirit and commitment, the Rock-appellas are poised to become a cherished part of SRU’s musical community.
