**LONDON** — A battle over British identity and the nation’s flag has emerged as the latest issue widening the political divide in the United Kingdom in 2025. As the Labour government faces growing criticism over several issues — from cracking down on free speech to its migration policies — many Britons express concern about their country’s future.
The issue simmered over the summer amid concerns about a growing rift between the ruling elites and the public, centered on the nation’s flag. Although the debate has been ongoing for several years, it gained new life following anti-Israel protests that erupted after Hamas’ mass terror attack against Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, Britain has seen a proliferation of Palestinian flags across the country.
Tensions increased further over the display of Palestinian flags on public buildings. Critics argue this represents an abandonment of traditional British values and suggest immigrant communities are dictating community values.
Several councils in major cities, all with sizable immigrant communities—including Sheffield, Preston, and Bradford—bowed to public pressure. Last month, they chose to raise the Palestinian flag to honor the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
“There’s only one flag that should be flying on public buildings in the U.K., and I include the home nations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and that’s the Union Flag,” said Colin Brazier, a commentator on British culture, in an interview with Fox News Digital. “We need to start cohering around national stories and symbols, and the flag is the simplest, most visual, visceral way of doing that.”

“You can’t say it’s the thought that counts because the Brits are beyond the point of no return.”

*“‘Dictating community values’ — Every time you hear politicians say ‘fighting for our values’ or ‘standing up for our principles,’ remember: values are not a concrete thing. People are. It’s the people that make a nation, not values or principles.”*
