(NEXSTAR) — Still waiting for your September Social Security check? You’re in luck, because the wait is almost over.
According to the Social Security Administration’s 2025 payment schedule, September is one of the few nearly uninterrupted months, and Social Security payments have almost entirely been dispersed. Those who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 received their payment on Sept. 1. Beneficiaries with birth dates between the 1st and 20th have also received their payments.
On Wednesday, Sept. 24, those with birth dates between the 21st and 31st can expect to receive their benefits.
### Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Payments in September
The one caveat is Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. SSI beneficiaries include individuals with disabilities and older adults with little to no income. In 2025, the maximum monthly SSI payment is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple.
These beneficiaries did **not** receive an SSI payment in September due to Labor Day falling on Sept. 1. Typically, SSI payments go out on the first day of the month unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case payments are processed on the previous business day. This resulted in September’s SSI payments being sent early on Aug. 29.
SSI beneficiaries will receive their next payment on Wednesday, Oct. 1, and then another payment on Halloween, Oct. 31, which counts as November’s payment. There will be no SSI payment in November, but two payments will occur in December.
### October’s Social Security Payment Schedule
| Payment Type | Date |
|—————————————————————–|————————-|
| October’s SSI payment | Wednesday, Oct. 1 |
| Social Security (for those receiving benefits before May 1997 or who also receive SSI) | Friday, Oct. 3 |
| If your birth date is between the 1st and 10th | Wednesday, Oct. 8 |
| If your birth date is between the 11th and 20th | Wednesday, Oct. 15 |
| If your birth date is between the 21st and 31st | Wednesday, Oct. 22 |
| November’s SSI payment | Friday, Oct. 31 |
Regardless of the timing of SSI payments, beneficiaries will receive all of their anticipated funds.
### Changes to Benefits Payment Methods and Cost-of-Living Adjustments
Starting in October, the method of sending Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits may change. An executive order signed earlier this year mandates that payments from both agencies be dispersed electronically, with a few exceptions.
Additionally, a recent projection suggests Social Security beneficiaries could see a larger cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2026 than this year. According to The Senior Citizens League, current estimates point to a 2.7% increase for next year, up from this year’s 2.5%. An official announcement on the 2026 COLA is expected in mid-October.
