Sindhudurg Becomes First District in India to Implement Artificial Intelligence in Administration and Public Safety
Sindhudurg has emerged as the first district in India to implement artificial intelligence (AI) across its administration and public safety sectors. Since May 1, 2025, eight key departments in the district have been operating through AI systems, marking a significant milestone in leveraging technology for governance.
A NITI Aayog team is scheduled to visit Sindhudurg next month to study this pioneering initiative, said Fisheries and Ports Minister and Sindhudurg Guardian Minister Nitesh Rane during a press conference held in Mumbai.
Minister Rane lauded the efforts and guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in making Sindhudurg the country’s first AI-enabled district. He noted, “This initiative has given a new identity to Sindhudurg, which has traditionally been known as a rural district.”
Through the use of AI, the safety of residents, businesses, and tourists has been significantly enhanced. The AI systems are actively preventing and investigating highway accidents and effectively addressing local issues such as elephant movement in the district. Additionally, many long-pending cases are now being resolved more efficiently thanks to this technology.
Minister Rane added that NITI Aayog will analyze how the AI model has been implemented in Sindhudurg with an eye toward potentially replicating it at the national level. Currently, AI-based systems are functional in critical sectors including urban development, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), police, health services, and the Zilla Parishad.
A presentation at the ministerial level is also planned to explore extending this AI-enabled governance model to other districts across Maharashtra, aiming to further modernize administration and public safety across the state.
Sindhudurg’s pioneering use of AI sets a new benchmark in smart governance, showcasing how technology can transform traditional rural districts into models of innovation and efficiency.
