With the beginning of the new year, several states are introducing new and updated laws. While these changes are often a mixed bag, car owners in New Hampshire are set to receive a significant break.

Starting January 31, The Granite State will officially end its vehicle inspection and emissions testing program for passenger vehicles. This welcome change means that drivers will now be personally responsible for ensuring their vehicles meet all safety standards.

For those unfamiliar with New Hampshire’s previous regulations, the current rules required vehicles to undergo a safety inspection within ten days of registration. Additionally, vehicles had to be inspected annually and every time ownership changed hands.

Although the state did not set fixed pricing for inspections, they typically cost between $20 and $50 per vehicle. The inspection process involved a mechanic examining key components and systems such as the steering, suspension, exhaust, and electrical system to ensure everything was in proper working order.

Vehicles manufactured from 1996 onward were also required to pass an on-board diagnostics (OBD) test. This test monitored the performance of major engine components, including emission control systems.

Unsurprisingly, these requirements added extra costs and were often seen as a burden by car owners. Fortunately, these mandates are finally being eliminated.

However, the state has issued a warning: if a vehicle fails inspection in late 2025, it cannot simply remain on the road without repairs. The vehicle must be fixed and pass a reinspection to be legally driven.

That said, it appears you can park a non-compliant vehicle until January 31 and still remain within the law.

This change is sure to bring relief to New Hampshire’s drivers as they take on the responsibility of maintaining their own vehicle’s safety standards moving forward.
